On Friday, October 9, three fighters stepped on the scale for UFC Vegas 122 and came in heavy. By the time the UFC posted its official weigh-in results, each of them had been handed the standard UFC weight miss penalty: a share of their purse sent straight to the opponent who made weight.
The short version is simple. If you miss weight in the UFC and the bout still goes ahead, the UFC weight miss penalty comes out of your purse. At Vegas 122 that cost was 20% of the purse for two fighters and 25% for the third, and all three bouts went on as scheduled.
The short answer on the UFC weight miss penalty
A fighter who comes in over the agreed limit forfeits a percentage of their purse to the opponent. The fight then usually proceeds at whatever weight both sides accept, as long as the opponent agrees to take it. If the opponent or the promotion says no, the bout can be scrapped.
The UFC’s results page does not explain how the percentage is chosen, and it has not published a fixed table linking pounds over to percentage lost. What the Vegas 122 card does show is that a bigger miss can bring a bigger fine.
What the three misses at UFC Vegas 122 cost
| Fighter | Division | Limit on the night | Weight | Purse forfeited | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ketlen Souza | Strawweight | 116 lbs | 117 lbs | 20% | Lost to Loopy Godinez by unanimous decision (29-28 x3) |
| Ismael Bonfim | Lightweight | 156 lbs | 163.5 lbs | 25% | Lost to Francisco Prado by TKO, Round 1, 4:23 |
| Brendson Ribeiro | Light heavyweight | 206 lbs | 208.5 lbs | 20% | Beat Felipe Franco by guillotine choke, Round 1, 1:49 |
The limits listed for these non-title bouts sit one pound above the usual division marks of 115, 155 and 205. That extra pound is the margin fighters have in a non-title fight. Souza missed it by a single pound. Ribeiro was two and a half pounds over. Bonfim was seven and a half over, and his was the only 25% fine on the card.
Missing weight also does not decide the fight. Ribeiro came in heavy and still finished his opponent inside two minutes, while Souza and Bonfim both lost. The money moves either way.
When a miss cancels the fight instead
The purse fine is the outcome when the opponent agrees to fight. When the gap is too large, the bout can disappear. At UFC London, Luana Carolina came in eight pounds over the 136-pound bantamweight limit and her scheduled bout with Melissa Mullins never happened. Mullins had done her job on the scale and still went home without a fight.
Bonfim has seen that side too. His 2023 bout against Vinc Pichel was called off after he came in three and a half pounds over, so a cancellation is not reserved for huge misses. It depends on whether the opponent, and the promotion, are willing to go ahead.
Why repeat misses carry a bigger price
The ufc weight miss penalty on paper is a percentage of one paycheck. The real cost of a pattern is the contract. Vegas 122 was Bonfim’s third weight miss in the UFC, and he has been removed from the UFC roster, according to Sherdog. That report did not include an official UFC statement on the move.
His run ended at 2-5 in the promotion, beginning with a Contender Series contract in 2022. On Instagram he told supporters his career is not over: “My story doesn’t end here.”
That is the part many fans miss. One heavy weigh-in costs money. Several of them change how matchmakers see a fighter, because every miss creates a bout that might fall apart on Friday morning.
Common misconceptions about missing weight
- “The fighter who misses gets disqualified.” Not at Vegas 122. All three heavy fighters competed, and one of them won.
- “There is one fixed fine.” The same card produced both 20% and 25% forfeits, so the ufc weight miss penalty is not a single flat number.
- “The fine goes to the UFC.” The UFC’s own notes say each forfeited amount goes to the opponent.
- “A one-pound miss is no big deal.” Souza was a pound over the allowance and still lost a fifth of her purse.
For fighters and coaches, the lesson sits in the camp, not on the scale. A safe, gradual approach to making weight, planned with a qualified coach and medical guidance, avoids the scramble that leads to misses in the first place. Weight miss questions fans ask
What happens if you miss weight in UFC?
You usually forfeit part of your purse to your opponent and the fight goes ahead if they agree. At UFC Vegas 122, three fighters missed and gave up 20% or 25% of their purses.
How much can you miss weight by in UFC?
Non-title bouts carry a one-pound allowance, so a lightweight bout is listed at 156 pounds. Anything above the listed limit counts as a miss.
Does the fight still happen if someone misses weight?
Often yes, but not always. It depends on whether the opponent and the promotion agree to go ahead, and some bouts are canceled after big misses.
Will the ufc weight miss penalty get tougher?
For now, the UFC weight miss penalty works the way fans saw at Vegas 122: a purse forfeit, paid to the opponent, with the fight usually going on. Watch the weigh-in notes on upcoming cards to see whether 25% becomes more common for big misses. The scale is the first opponent on every fight week.
