UFC Edmonton Fight Card Preview: Can Buckley Stop Malott’s Run?

Update (Oct. 20): UFC Edmonton took place on Saturday, October 17. Mike Malott knocked out Joaquin Buckley with a knee and punches at 2:32 of the second round, and Jasmine Jasudavicius beat Erin Blanchfield by unanimous decision (29-28 on all three cards). The preview below was written before the event.

On Saturday, October 17, the UFC returned to Rogers Place in Edmonton with a 13-bout card headlined by a welterweight fight that could reshape the bottom half of the top 10. The UFC Edmonton fight card pairs No. 10 Joaquin Buckley (21-8) against No. 13 Mike Malott (14-2-1), with the prelims starting at 5pm ET and the main card at 8pm ET on Paramount+.

The stakes are lopsided. Buckley has dropped two in a row after a six-fight surge, while Malott arrives on a four-fight streak in front of a Canadian crowd. A loss would push Buckley out of the conversation he forced his way into in 2024.

Buckley vs Malott: what each man is fighting for

Buckley’s best run came in 2024, when he knocked out Stephen Thompson in the third round at UFC 307 and then forced a doctor’s stoppage against Colby Covington in December. That streak earned him a five-round date with Kamaru Usman in June 2025, which he lost on the scorecards. Sean Brady then beat him on points at UFC 328 in May. Both men out-wrestled him, and that pattern is the main thing to track on Saturday.

Malott’s last loss was a third-round stoppage against Neil Magny at UFC 297 in January 2024. Since then he has beaten Trevin Giles, flattened Charles Radtke in the second round at UFC 315, outpointed Kevin Holland and, in April, stopped Gilbert Burns in round three of his first UFC headliner. That streak began in this same arena.

Styles and keys to victory

How Buckley gets back on track

Fifteen of Buckley’s 21 wins have come by knockout or TKO, and he has never won by submission. His path is simple to describe and hard to execute: stay standing, use a 76-inch reach that gives him three inches on Malott, and make every exchange expensive. If Malott shoots, Buckley’s takedown defense and his ability to get back to his feet will decide more than his power will.

How Malott extends the streak

Malott’s 14 wins split almost evenly: six knockouts, six submissions and two decisions. That balance is the problem for Buckley. Malott does not need to win a pure striking contest; he can mix level changes into his combinations and look for positions where Buckley’s power is muted. The Burns finish also showed he can stay patient into the third round, which matters against a puncher who has scored late stoppages of his own.

Blanchfield vs Jasudavicius and the rest of the main card

On the UFC Edmonton fight card, the co-main may carry more title weight than the headliner. Blanchfield, 8-1 inside the Octagon, already owns a win over Rose Namajunas in Edmonton and paid back Tracy Cortez with a rear-naked choke at UFC 322. Jasudavicius, who trains with Malott at Niagara Top Team, rebounded from a first-round loss to Manon Fiorot by outpointing Karine Silva in April. There is some needle here too: Jasudavicius previously beat Fatima Kline, a close friend and teammate of Blanchfield.

The rest of the UFC Edmonton fight card’s main portion leans on Canadian names and debutants:

  • Kyle Nelson vs Cristian Perez: a Canadian veteran with four wins in his last six outings faces a Contender Series signee whose 15 pro wins include 12 finishes.
  • Marc-Andre Barriault vs Kyle Daukaus (middleweight): At 36, Barriault has one win in six but picked up Fight of the Night in each of his last two.
  • Louis Jourdain vs Timmy Cuamba (bantamweight): Charles Jourdain’s brother, a Contender Series graduate, makes his debut.
  • Mandel Nallo vs Nate Landwehr (lightweight): Landwehr, 38, moves up a division while riding three straight losses.

Prelims worth tuning in early for

The early part of the UFC Edmonton fight card has seven bouts. Alberta’s own Tanner Boser meets Jhonata Diniz at heavyweight, and two unbeaten heavyweight newcomers, former Olympic judoka Javad Mahjoub (5-0) and Joel Faglier (6-0), share the cage. Former title challenger Katlyn Cerminara returns for her first fight since UFC 299 against debutant Mackenzie Stiller.

Also on the undercard: Julien Leblanc vs Nick Galanti, Calgary’s Chad Anheliger vs Steven Koslow, No. 14 Melissa Croden vs Chelsea Chandler, and unbeaten Cody Chovancek vs Road to UFC tournament winner SuYoung Yoo. The full bout order is listed on the official UFC event page.

X-factors and open questions

Crowd energy is the obvious one. Malott, Jasudavicius, Nelson, Boser and Anheliger all give the building someone to cheer, and a loud room tends to push fighters into more urgent exchanges. For Buckley, the bigger variable is whether the lessons from the Usman and Brady fights show up in his defensive wrestling, because nothing in his recent record suggests his power has faded.

What we do not know is who waits for the winner. The UFC has not tied either headliner to a next opponent. Buckley’s earlier call for an open-weight BMF tournament shows he likes big fights, but a third straight loss would make that talk hard to sustain. Why the UFC Edmonton fight card matters at welterweight

Watch the first takedown attempt in the main event. If Buckley stuffs it and keeps Malott at range, his power gets a fair shot; if Malott lands it, the UFC Edmonton fight card could end with a Canadian climbing into the top 10. Either way, one of these two leaves Rogers Place with a much clearer 2027.
